Middlezoy Church

I live no more than a hundred metres from this building. It sits at the top of the hill that the village sprawls down from. Although I'm not a religious person I do take pleasure from churches, cathedrals, abbeys and the like and enjoy their architecture and their beauty. The churches in Somerset are, on the whole, pretty big for the communities they stand in and that is largely because the Abbey at Glastonbury was very wealthy in the Middle Ages when the churches were built.

It struck me on Friday evening, when I got home from work, that it was a lovely evening and I should go out with my camera. As I walked up the hill I realised that I have never really taken photos of the church, so I made an effort to put that right. It's a common thing, when you live in the shadow of something, that you almost stop seeing it. One thing that my interest in photography has done is to make me look at the world differently and look at the familiar in a new and interesting way.

One day I'll take some photos inside as well.

Just for historical interest, the oldest part of the church dates back to the 12th century and it was built on and added to up to about the16th century.
