Questions meme

1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favourite song, or your favourite kind of sandwich, maybe your favourite cat. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions

1. Have you been to Russia?
No, I have never been to Russia, though it is a country that fascinates me. It is so big and so diverse that it’s difficult to imagine what every aspect of it is like. I feel that Russia should be a cultural leader within Europe, yet not many of us know much about Russian culture. I have many Russian friends here on LJ and I’m very proud of that. One day I will visit my very special Russian friend and begin my education on ‘Russianness’ with all I learn from her.
2. Are you happy where you live at the moment or do you long to live somewhere else?
Most people who know me know the answer to this question! I like where I live, it’s where I grew up and where a lot of my roots are. It’s an area steeped in history and nestling in a beautiful landscape. But, I long to be in New Zealand, which seems to be my spiritual home. I feel more at home, more relaxed and have more of a sense of belonging there than anywhere else.
3. Why are you vegetarian?
I grew up on a farm. I once worked in the dairy industry. Yet I am vegetarian. I became veggie a little over twelve years ago. I never liked meat and couldn’t stand the tastes and textures, and I just reached a point where I thought to myself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ So I stopped eating meat from then. Very quickly since then questions about cruelty and welfare have grown in me and those moral issues have reinforced my resolve never to eat bits of dead animals ever again. I am lactose intolerant anyway (though I can eat cheese in small amounts) and I have never liked eggs, so I am practically vegan. I love food and cooking and I really enjoy exploring what is possible within a veggie diet, what combinations of ingredients work together.
4. What is your heritage?
My heritage is probably not that interesting. On my mother’s side of my family I have traced one branch to living in the village I live in now as far back as 1650. So, I can certainly say that half of me is south-west of England through and through. My father’s family come from Essex, in the south-east of England, but the family name is a border reiving one. Brief history – in the days when England and Scotland were separate countries there was a lot of cross-border raiding going on. Parties of raiders (or reivers) would cross the border, steal cattle, ransack farmsteads and kill anyone who stood in their way, and then take the spoils of their raid back across the border to escape justice. My family was a reiving family from the Scottish side of the border and there are folk tales about some of their exploits that are told even now. They were a bad lot. These links give some background and a little bit about my reiving family.

5. What do you enjoy doing after a long day at work?
It really depends on the time of the year. Generally I don’t get home until about six in the evening. In the summer I enjoy going out and taking photos in the best light of the day. In the winter I enjoy watching films, reading and surfing the Internet. I like to go to gigs, but haven’t done a lot of that lately. I also like to sometimes meet up with friends in a pub for a good old natter about everything and nothing. Right now my evenings seem to be taken up with editing my book and getting it ready for publishing.
