Arlington Court, North Devon

At the end of last week I took my mother for a day out around North Devon and Exmoor. (Aren't I the dutiful son?) We started by driving right through and across Exmoor. Because of the wet weather we have had it was really green and purple with heather. I love Exmoor. I spent quite a lot of time in the area when I was a teenager and see it as a kind of extension of my home patch. The National Park is a kind of farmed wilderness and as ancient as anywhere.

Our first stop, if you don't count a pee break in Wheddon Cross, was Arlington Court near Combe Martin, a stone's throw from the North Devon coast. It is a Georgian manor house set in a large area of parkland and some nice gardens.

And here it is.

Very Jane Austen!

Honeysuckle in the garden

I thought this made for a nice composition

Doorway between the formal garden and the kitchen garden

Ornamental grasses

A path, a path!

There were great reflections in the pond

The house from the side. I loved the colour of the stone it was built from.

And the back of the house.

Lichen on a tree

The 'servants quarters'. Very nice too!

Next: The Valley of the Rocks - Guess what that's all about.
