Lake Vyrnwy Sculpture Park

At the base of the dam at Lake Vyrnwy there is a fabulous sculpture park. It's only been there for a few years and is still growing. It exhibits the work of local and overseas artists in a wonderfully picturesque and natural setting. There is work there from many eastern European artists, from Lithuania, Estonia and Russia. I don't remember the names of the artists, or even many of the names of the pieces, come to that, but I was bowled over by the quality of the works.

Here is a selection of my favourites.

Powis Castle

On the day that I arrived at my aunt's in Welshpool, I took a quick spin a couple of kilometres up the road to Powis Castle. Apparently it's a medieval castle but has been built on and rebuilt and added to and changed and now really just looks like a big house. Okay, a very big house. I didn't go into the castle itself but did have a look around the gardens. There are a load of terraces in front of the house which step steadily down into the valley below. The gardens were quite impressive, though not out with the full flush of spring like things in the south-west. Still, I found a few really nice things to snap away at and kept walking to fend off the cold.

Looking across the valley from the front of the house, sorry, castle.
