Pistyll Rhaeadr, Powys, Wales

Continuing with photos from my recent foray into deepest, darkest Wales, here are some pictures of a place I had wanted to visit for a long time.

We set off quite early, before any other tourists were breakfasted and thinking of heading out to see the sights. Wales has many special places and there are a few that attract a lot of people, especially if they are free. One of those is this wonderful waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr. I find it amusing, and I'm sure my Canadian friends will too, that this waterfall is described by the Welsh Tourist Board as being bigger than Niagara. Of course, it has a higher drop than Niagara, but bigger it isn't. Even so, it's an impressive, beautiful and delightful thing.

The first photo was taken as we were approaching along the side of a deep valley. It was still very hazy and that gives the waterfall a really mysterious quality as you spot it between the trees from a way off.

One thing I especially liked, well two actually, was that you can climb around the waterfall to get as close as you dare, and the steep rocks allow, and that there's a natural arch that the waterfall drops behind. That arch gives a nicely reassuring pause to the eye as the water thunders through it.

I feel really grateful that I was there at this time of year. I would imagine that in summer the leaves on the trees would seriously get in the way of the view. Being there in spring, before all that growth got going meant that I had an uninterrupted view of this natural wonder. I hope you like it as much as I do.
