The Lost Gardens of Heligan - part one

Wednesday of last week, I went to The Lost Gardens of Heligan near St Austell, in Cornwall. They may have been lost, but I managed to find them.

So, I hear you ask, what was he doing whizzing down the motorway when he should have been at work? Well, the Monday before was a bank holiday here in the UK, and it also happened to be my father's birthday. And by the way, those two facts are in no way related. He had decided, because it was a 'special' birthday, that he would invite lots of people around to help him celebrate. This meant, being a dutiful son, I had to get a large tent put up in the field next door, make sure that enough chairs and tables appeared from somewhere, and generally make sure it all ran smoothly. I decided to take a couple of days off after the event so that I could still have my 'week-end off'.

It all went well, he was happy, got to see lots of his friends and family who we don't bump into every day, and I managed to take lots of photos of the event while still managing to clutch a large glass of cider to my bosom at all times.

Tuesday was spent clearing up and getting everything back to normal, which gave me Wednesday free. I decided, as the weather was nice, to offer my mother and my aunt a drive down to the depths of Cornwall. So, at about midday we were parking and looking for somewhere to have lunch.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan are really, really good, and I would happily add them to the itinerary of anyone coming to stay. It may be a three hour drive to get there but that's no real hardship. It was especially meaningful for me because, among many other things and special gardens, there is a large New Zealand garden there - right up my street and really evocative of the hundreds of kilometres of New Zealand bush and wild places I've walked through.

So, without more ado, here is part one of my photos of my visit to Heligan.
