Today is the start of my 'summer of lots of visitors'. I suppose it's possible to say that it began with Rebekka visiting Scotland but that didn't really have me as host, so as far as I'm concerned it starts here.
For most of the rest of the summer I will be enjoying the company of lots of other people as they come to, or pass through Somerset. It starts today with my father's cousin, Betty. Many years before I came along Betty became a young GI bride at the end of the second world war and went to Maine with her airman husband. I've seen her a few times over the years and some time ago they actually lived over here for a while before going back to retire in Florida. Last year her husband died and left provision in his will for Betty to come back to England to visit family and important places while she was still able to do so.
When I get home from work today Betty, her husband's neice (who I've never met and don't even know her name), and my aunt will have arrived to stay for a few days. I've promised to take them around and show Betty anything she wants to see or visit. So, who knows where that will take me?
That's just the start of it. Two weeks from today, early in August, my Dutch friends, Gerrit and Jos, will be visiting for a week or so. Among other things we will be going to both nights of the Glastonbury Extravaganza, Madness on the Saturday evening and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on the Sunday. (I will dress accordingly!) I'll be taking a couple of days off to entertain them and I hope we end up in some interesting places.
Then soon after Gerrit and Jos go back to The Netherlands, Monika and Marcin (from Poland) will be flying in after their summer picking strawberries in Finland. I'm proud to say that I met Monika through LiveJournal. She visited a couple of years ago, and I couldn't have put her off too much because she's coming back! I don't know how long they're staying, and it doesn't matter, the most important thing is that they come. I'm looking forward to their visit enormously. Again, I will try to take a couple of days off to take them far and wide, but I also know they can entertain themselves quite nicely with short trips to Glastonbury.
Also, somewhere amongst all that, there should be a visit from my adorable cousin Hannah. She's going to be spending the next year in Spain and France and this will be the last chance I have to see her and give her big hugs before her time away. I will miss her dreadfully, but I hope to turn the tables and visit her while she's in La Belle France.
So, it's going to be a busy time, lots of fun and all of it spent with great company. I don't like making too many plans and, because the weather can seriously play it's part, it isn't that sensible to. But, even so, who could ask for more?
