I suppose I ought to introduce them. The one on the left of the picture is the mascot for the Summer Games and is called Wenlock. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who founded the modern Olympic movement, saw some games that took place in the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock and it was from there that he got his idea to recreate the Olympic Games in Greece. The one on the right is called Mandeville and he is the mascot for the Paralympic Games which will be held a few weeks after the Summer Games. Games for disabled athletes have been held at Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire for many years, so it could be said that the Olympics are coming home.
I'm sure that, with all the wonderful creative minds we have sloshing around our fair land, we could have come up with something better and less 'tacky' than these little fellows. I suppose this is what you get for designing and agreeing something by committee.
I will be perfectly honest with you. When I saw them for the first time my only thought was, 'It looks like the blue one has wet himself!' Perhaps out of embarrassment.
