The Grand Pier, Weston super Mare

You may remember, a couple of months ago, I visited Brean Down on the North Somerset coast. I took lots of photos that day. Some of them were taken looking across the bay towards Weston super Mare. In my photos you could see the town, the beach and the Grand Pier pointing 400 metres out into the Bristol Channel.

On Monday morning, just as I was arriving at work, I heard on the car radio that the pier was on fire. In a macabre sort of way I wished I could be there to take photos. Especially as it happened at a time that meant that no-one was hurt.

This is how the BBC reported the story on their website. News spread around the world and the story was even covered by the Sydney Morning Herald and The Press in Christchurch New Zealand.

As luck would have it I have a friend, John Bird, who works in Weston. On Monday evening he e-mailed me some photos taken by his work colleague Andy Phipps. So, these photos aren't mine but they record the events very well.
